Project description
The lakes located within the park were constructed by Council in the 1980s.
The top pond was specifically built to help protect Emerald Lake’s main pond from sediment build-up, erosion and high flow kinetic energy input.
Since being built, this small lake has never been desilted, which has resulted in it being full of sediment.
The top pond now requires desilting to ensure the future protection of Emerald Lake Park’s main pond over the next several years.
Council is scheduled to complete the required maintenance works in early 2025, and once complete they will:
- restore the storage capacity of the pond
- restore the functionality and the native biodiversity of the wetland
- better protect the downstream waterways from erosion
- help protect the heritage of the wetland
- improve environmental amenity
- reduce flooding risk
Funding
The desilting works are fully funded by Cardinia Shire Council.
Progress update
Council is scheduled to complete proactive maintenance works on Lake Nobelius’ top pond located within Emerald Lake Park from Tuesday 28 January 2025.
Council has appointed APS Drainage as the contractor to complete pond sediment desilting works on its behalf.
Desilting works are expected to be completed over a week, then a further sediment drying process will take approximately 3 – 5 weeks to be completed in a section of the overflow carpark. All works are expected to be completed by early March 2025, conditions permitting.
Disruptions
- temporary fencing will be installed around the pond and section of the Bellbird carpark to ensure community safety while works are taking place.
- the walking tracks around this pond will be temporarily closed to the community during the desilting works.
- access from properties fronting the park and pond will be closed off.
- traffic management will be in place as machinery operates at slow speeds to transport the sediment to the top overflow (Bellbird) carpark for the drying process. Truck movements within in the park will be carried out prior to 11am on weekdays.
- additional noise, lighting and dust may also be temporarily experienced in the area.
Once the desilting works have been completed, fencing will be removed and access to the footpath and properties will be restored.
A protection plan has been developed and will be in place, to ensure minimal disruption occurs with native flora and fauna. No major tree or vegetation removal is planned as part of these works, and any impacted fauna will be temporarily relocated to surrounding waterways for their safety and protection.
Project Highlights
- Works are scheduled on the top pond located from Tuesday 28 January 2025
- Desilting works are the process of removing sediment, silt, and debris from bodies of water.
