Project description

Council has completed road safety upgrades on Fieldstone Boulevard from Beaconsfield-Emerald Rd to Holm Park Rd.   

This project was part of the Australian Government’s 2024 – 2025 Black Spot Program and Council’s Local Area Traffic Improvement program. 

Works included: 

• The installation of three new flat top road humps between Scenic Dr and Harbour St 
• The installation of two pairs of asphalt speed cushions to the east of Timberside Dr, between Northview Ct and Gumview Blvd 
• Kerb and channel realignment work 
• Minor concrete footpath work 
• Lighting upgrades at 6 locations 

In mid-2023, Council completed community consultation regarding the installation of local area traffic management devices/speed humps, otherwise referred to as speed humps.  

This consultation was prompted by a review of road safety in the area, which identified significant risk due to the number of reported crashes, customer requests and the traffic and speed data. 

Lighting upgrades

To support the installation of the proposed speed humps and traffic management devices as part of stage 2 works, Council installed adequate street lighting in the area to enhance these safety improvements.

Council installed six heritage-style light poles at pre-identified locations to illuminate the new speed humps and to meet current Australian Standards.

Five of these lights replacde existing heritage lantern-style poles, however the new light poles matched the previous style of other decorative lighting poles in the area. Of these five replacements:

• Four are heritage-style poles with curved tops to direct lighting onto speed humps.
• One is a heritage-style pole with a 0.9m outreach arm to illuminate a wider section of the road with a flat-top speed hump.

Additionally, one brand new heritage-style pole with a 0.9m outreach arm was installed at the same location at this wider section.

As part of the Australian Standards AS/NZS 1158, a certain level of lighting, brightness and spill onto the road is required to support the installation of new traffic management devices.

During the initial design process, a lighting assessment determined that the existing heritage lantern-type poles did not provide sufficient illumination for the new speed humps to meet Australian Standards. Council investigated a replacement globe for the existing light poles, however, were unable to find an appropriate modern day LED equivalent to match the 20-year-old aging infrastructure.

Wanting to preserve the heritage feel of the Berwick Views Estate, Council has worked to find new and similar alternative lights that match the original street lighting design from other areas of the estate, with enhanced functionality.

Progress update

Road safety upgrades are now complete along Fieldstone Blvd between Beaconsfield-Emerald Rd to Holm Park Rd.

Stage 2 works (completed)

Stage 2 works included:

• New flat top road humps
• Asphalt speed cushions
• Kerb and channel realignment
• Minor footpath work

Additional road resurfacing works are also being simultaneously completed on several sections of existing road pavement along Fieldstone Blvd

Stage 1 works (completed)

• Lighting upgrades from Beaconsfield-Emerald Rd to Holm Park Rd were undertaken from February to March 2025.
• Lights have been activated by Ausnet.
