Approximately 400 decorative street light fittings on local roads Beaconsfield and Garfield will be replaced with energy efficient LED light fittings.

Existing 80-watt mercury vapour decorative street lights are being replaced with energy efficient LED fittings.

Replacement works will be scheduled over the next nine months and will be completed by Ausnet’s approved contractors.

Lights will be replaced in the following locations*:

• Berwick Views Estate bordered by Beaconsfield-Emerald Road, Holm Park Road, Fieldstone Boulevard, Mikey Boulevard, Liam Circuit, O’Neil Road, Janet Bowman Boulevard, Woods Point Drive, Timberside Drive and Sanctuary Way and including Vista Place, Castle Court, Hillview Court and Patrick Place.
• Panorama Estate, including the area bordered by the Princess Highway, O’Shea Road, the train line, and Brunt Road.
• Coach House Lane, Beaconsfield.
• Silky Oak Court, Garfield.
• Briarwood Close, Garfield.

Council has worked to find new and similar alternative lights that match the original street lighting design, with enhanced functionality. The replacement light fittings are of a very similar style to the existing lights.

There are a number of benefits associated with the new LED fittings:

• Approximately 80% more energy efficient.
• Improved lighting quality and visibility, with efficient technology that directs more light towards the street.
• Lower energy consumption.
• Lower maintenance costs.

Council will continue to pause the replacement of mercury vapour lights in Heritage Springs and Lakeside estates pending the potential future approval by AusNet Services for a retrofit LED globe. Following concerns raised by the community, AusNet is reviewing the potential use of a retrofit LED globe in order to retain the existing light fittings in Heritage Springs. It’s anticipated a decision on the use of a LED retrofit globe will be known by April 2026.

Funding

The LED street lighting upgrade program is funded by Cardinia Shire Council with support from Ausnet Services’ Mercury Vapour Lighting replacement program.

Progress update

845 mercury vapour lights were replaced with LED fittings in the 2022–23 financial year.

375 lights were changed over in 2023–24 financial year before the program was placed on hold in the Heritage Springs estate.

Previous program pause

The program was put on hold last year in response to community feedback that called for the existing lights in Heritage Springs estate to be retained.

Following concerns raised by the community and discussions between Council and AusNet Services, AusNet is reviewing the potential use of a retrofit LED globe in order to retain the existing light hardware. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
