Project description

Level crossing removals – Pakenham

The three level crossings in Pakenham at Main Street, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road have been removed, along with the new premium stations at Pakenham and East Pakenham now open to rail passengers.

The level crossings were removed by building a rail bridge that extends over the 3 roads, which has improved safety, assisted traffic flow and reduced congestion around the busy Pakenham centre.

By building the rail bridge over the road, it has created extensive and vibrant open spaces for the community to enjoy including a shared user path, basketball court, playground, picnic tables and barbecues.

The level crossings were removed as part of the Victorian Government commitment to have the Pakenham line level crossing free by 2025, and extending the metropolitan rail line with new stations to cater for the growing population in the area.
