Project description

The Little Road bridge in Iona is located across Bunyip River at the north end of Little Road, connecting Main Drain Road South and Bunyip River Road.

The current bridge is an old-style timber deck structure with steel support beams.

Little Road bridge has heritage significance as it is one of the last remaining timber bridge over Bunyip River.

After comprehensive reports and community consultation were completed in 2018, Council decided to close the bridge to vehicular access, as the structure was no longer suitable or able to service traffic volumes.

Despite having regular maintenance as part of Council’s proactive bridge schedule, a recent inspection noted the further deterioration of the wooden railing and decking, which is now a safety concern.

Council has now made the decision to close the Little Road bridge in Iona to pedestrian and vehicular access until further assessments are undertaken.

Council is committed to creating a safe and accessible environment for everyone who walks, jogs, uses mobility aids or travels along our roads, footpaths and bridges. Council has a responsibility is to immediately close the Little Road bridge to ensure community safety.

Initial assessments are that the bridge may require significant works so the community can safely access it again.  Further assessment will be required to understand these needs.

Funding

Any future works on this bridge will be pending budget or funding allocations.

No funding is currently allocated to this project.

Progress update

The Little Road bridge was closed from 26 May 2025.

To ensure community safety, Council has installed secure fencing and signage to close the bridge.

Council will be undertaking assessments into the works required.  Council is working through this process, and any future works will be pending budget or funding allocations.
